Your abs, your midsection, your belly, whatever you want to call them, are an important part of your strength and fitness. The most popular term these days of course is "your core".

A lot of emphasis has been placed on well-defined abs to ensure a more appealing physique or figure. This is absolutely true. A great set of abs can enhance your appearance & may even improve your self-esteem as a whole. There's no doubt about it. 

However, there are way more benefits to a strong core than just sex appeal.

Your core consists of your external obliques, rectus abdominis, and transversus abdominis muscle groups. When you strengthen them, you would be allowing your body to become more effective in performing other routines. Additionally, it can also prevent injuries from occurring.
