Now That's Raw!! 2: One Great Raw Deserves Another

{This article is the continuation of a series I started (but never completed) as a two-parter some time ago. Here's the first article . Just to help you get up to speed. Now you're ready for the sequel...} Vegan or vegetarian. Which is which? Is there a difference between vegetarian and raw food diets? They both share one common trait---an affinity for vegetables. However, a raw foodist IS a type of vegetarian who generally does NOT cook their fruits or vegetables.

Go Meatless!

Vegetables or veggies (as they are most commonly referred to) are a vital part of any diet program you choose to pursue. It was Hippocrates that said it best: "Let food be thy medicine, thy medicine shall be thy food." As with any diet you should ALWAYS consult with your doctor for guidance . Basically a vegetarian diet, the raw food diet promotes eating and drinking ‘living’ foods. Living foods and juices contain the maximum amount of fiber found in raw produce, fiber that can be lost in processing. Such foods are easily metabolized and tend to be lower in calories than the average diet. Heating food above 116°F destroys enzymes that aid in food digestion and absorption as well as diminishing its nutritional value. Quick Facts A diet of at least 75% raw food offers numerous health benefits, such as increased energy, improved skin appearance, better digestion, weight loss and reduced risk of serious illnesses like heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Sneezin' Away

What is an allergic reaction?  Essentially, this is when the body reacts defensively to a perceived threat and fights the allergens in the same way it does a viral infection. Eating foods "out of season and region" may also contribute to allergic reactions.  You may ask, "What's wrong with eating an apple in June?" Nothing.  Unless, of course, you have a food allergy.... Most produce  is transported worldwide by trucks & trains for hundreds (or in some cases thousands of miles if by boat) in partially opened containers. photo credit: DSC_0004 via photopin (license) Based on the time of year, the container may come in contact with in-season allergens like mold, poison ivy, poison oak, various types of pollen.  These allergens are constantly in the environment, but may be more prevalent in some regions during certain times of the year. This can be partially remedied by washing the produce thoroughly before consumption. However, in

Antioxidants Are Everywhere!!

Antioxidants fight disease and germs. Photo Credit: images.wisegeek.com Though oral supplements are available, the best resource for this is through healthy food. Nutrient absorption through food is more effective than vitamin supplements because your liver does not have to work as hard to assimilate them. Some people haven’t figured it out yet. It's a total mystery to a lot of folks. How do you get antioxidants from food? Most antioxidants available are found in vegetables. Here is a short list includes well-known veggies that are rich in antioxidants: broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, spinach, onions, and various peppers. Believe it or not, there is actually a technique to finding antioxidant-rich vegetable choices:

Can You Go Vegetarian This Thanksgiving?

I have been asked  numerous times about the healthiest way to eat after the holidays. But what about during the holidays?   It is a known fact that many Americans experience substantial weight gain between the months of October through December.  Some may ask why this occurs.  The truth is there are a myriad of reasons as to why this occurs: inclement weather tends to make one less likely to want to exercise outdoors, limited sunlight can cause your circadian rhythms to become off balanced and may make you more sedentary, and at least a few dozen other factors. However, overwhelmingly, food is typically the culprit. We tend to consumer fattier & less nutritious meals during the late fall to early winter seasons. As weight loss becomes more challenging this ultimately causes you to work out even harder after the holiday seasons...unless you take action to offset the excess weight.    I believe that it is quite possible to create a nutritious and de

What Is Organic Food ? Good Question.....

Organic foods have been a heated topic of discussion for years between both academics & health food enthusiasts alike. I am not here to get into the intricacies of either argument.
